From the car park at the edge of Gries you follow the road to Winnebach, then turn into the path in the direction of Winnebachseehütte. Leaving behind the wood-covered region, you pass several avalanche-prone areas. The perfectly maintained trail winds its way steeply uphill, on the right hand side you find the rushing "Bachfalle" waters of Winnebach brook. Hiking time: approx. 2 hours. Once reached the hut, you proceed to the lake's run-off area and further on to the terrace located above. Past picture-book glacier polish terrain in eastern direction to the three marvelous mountain lakes. Continue through rock-strewn and grass-covered terrain to the Bachfalleferner glacier snout.

Where the trail branches off you follow the upper part of the route, circling an eyecatching rock column leading towards a secluded side valley. Past the high Alpine cirque you get to gravel and snow-covered fields that take you up to the ridge on a small saddleback. A short downhill trail merges into the upper part of Grüntatzenferner glacier where you cross the basin and proceed to the eastern saddleback and – through a rock-strewn part – to the summit.

Author’s recommendation

This mountain tour can also be extended well as a circumnavigation of the Hohe Seeblaskogel.
