Snowshoe hiking & winter walking

Step by step towards a holistic experience

The hiking paradise of Sölden also has a marvelous winter season: 49.5 km of cleared, signposted winter hiking trails take walkers straight through snow-covered forests, white meadows and along Ötztaler Ache mountain brook. Adventure-seeking vacationers grab their snowshoes and listen to the crunching snow under their feet while lively Sölden disappears in the background. Trudging  through the untouched white either on your own or accompanied by a local guide you will take new insights on the way to rustic mountain huts.

The approximately 52 km long bike trail starts in Haiming and ends in Sölden. The route runs through all Ötztal villages and is probably the most varied cycle path the valley has to offer.

The cycle path starts in the center of Haiming and leads via the hamlets of Magerbach and Schlierenzau to Ötztal Bahnhof where the route runs several hundred meters parallel to the railway tracks and bends southwards at the height of Area 47. Along the rushing Ötztaler Ache brook you cycle to Oetz, where you continue along the Ötztal federal road. Just before Tumpen you conquer a strenuous ascent. The cycle path changes from asphalt to gravel (in the second turn) and takes you through a small forest to Tumpen. Here the cycle path changes to the eastern side of the valley, following a quite easy ascent past Engelswand rock face and towards Umhausen. Here you cross the road again, continuing on the winding route past Umhausen's football field, west of Ötztaler Ache mountain brook. At the fork-off to Köfels you have to change to the Ötztal federal road until you reach the hamlet of Au, Längenfeld. This part of the route through Längenfeld can be found on the western side of the valley, close to the Ötztal Alps' rock faces. It has almost no change in altitude and runs through small hamlets on asphalt and gravel trails. Leaving behind Huben, the bike trail crosses the federal road again and runs parallel until you reach the hamlet of Bruggen. Here you cross the federal road for the last time. In Aschbach the path leads over a bridge, then uphill and slightly sloping down to the next bridge overpass. Keep to the east at the next fork-off and do NOT ride towards the Dog Pension but downhill to the valley floor where a bridge crosses the river. The last part of the Ötztal Cycle Trail takes you on the eastern shore of Ötztaler Ache to the village of Sölden.

Author’s recommendation

We strongly recommend to follow the route of the Ötztal Cycle Trail, otherwise you have to follow longer stretches on the busy Ötztal federal road.
