1. treasure: sheep drive to summer quarters
Description
The cross-border sheep drive over the Ötztal Alps main ridge is one of the most impressive traditions of the region. Our hike leads from Vent (1,900 m) through the nature- and history-rich Niedertal up to the Hochjoch Hospiz (2,413 m). Along the way, tour guide Alfons shares stories about the old grazing rights, the history, and the centuries-old practice of sheep herding. Near the hut, we experience a special moment: The sheep, which have traveled the long way from the Schnalstal over the 2,800-meter-high Hochjoch, meet in the Rofental. After a joint rest, we hike back to Vent – an impressive natural and cultural experience.
