1. treasure: sheep drive to summer quarters
Description
The cross-border sheep drive over the Ötztal Alps main ridge is one of the most impressive traditions of the region. Our hike goes from Vent (1,900 m) through the naturally and historically fascinating Rofental up to the Hochjoch Hospiz (2,413 m). Along the way, hiking guide Alfons shares stories about the old grazing rights, the history, and the centuries-old practice of sheep driving. Close to the hut, we experience a special moment: the sheep that have made the long journey from the Schnalstal over the 2,800 meter high Hochjoch meet in the Rofental. After a common rest, we hike back to Vent – an impressive nature and cultural experience.
