Ötztal glacier road

Scenic route from Sölden to the Skiers' paradise

By car or bus up to 2830 meters above sea level: welcome to Sölden where superlatives are the order of the day. The highest panoramic road of the Eastern Alps leads from Sölden up to Rettenbach Glacier and through the Rosi-Mittermeier tunnel further on to Tiefenbach Glacier. This splendid road takes glacier skiers and carving aficionados to their wintry heaven during the autumn months.

Connecting line - No road toll for skipass holders

If you drive towards the upper valley through Sölden, the glacier road branches off to the right at the very end of the village. On spectacular bends and steep ascents you will quickly gain altitude on this connecting toll road (free of charge with a valid skipass).

An average gradient of 11% awaits drivers on the 13 km long route to Rettenbach Glacier. If you also want to visit Tiefenbach Glacie you have to cross the mountain through Europe's highest road tunnel, passing also the highest point of the glacier road (2830 m).

If the air gets too thin, nobody gets out of breath when looking for a parking space: ample parking is available for cars and coaches at both glaciers. Only a ride on the free glacier skibus is even more relaxing.

Better be prepared for everything

2800 m above sea level stand for high Alpine terrain. Quickly changing temperatures and heavy rain or snow occur here faster than you can say "sunshine day". Therefore it is strongly recommended to be prepared for every weather condition in the autumn months, especially if you arrive with your private car.

With winter tires and snow chains (in the trunk) you have excellent chances to get off the mountain safely again.

All types of buses and heavy vehicles (semitrailers up to 38 tons) are allowed to drive to the glacier on the fully asphalted road (regular road width), provided they have snow chains and track chains on board.

PS: Did you know that?

The winding Ötztal Glacier Road served as a film shooting location for the James Bond blockbuster "Spectre". The spectacular action scenes of a wintry chase through the Ötztal Alps can be admired in the new 007 ELEMENTS James Bond Cinematic Installation. But, please, don't try it yourself!
