The ski season in Sölden starts as early as late September or early October and ends again only at the beginning of May. We owe this super long winter season to our two glacier ski areas, Tiefenbach and Rettenbach glaciers. On the latter, the international ski stars also start the Alpine Ski World Cup season every year in mid-October, when the men's and women's giant slalom races are held up here.
The two glacier ski areas are not only linked to each other by modern mountain lifts. You can also ski from one glacier to the next through a spectacular ski tunnel - an experience that simply must be part of every ski holiday in Sölden and should be at the top of your must-do list.
The winter ski area, which traditionally goes into operation in mid-November, also shows greatness at the top station of Gaislachkogl, which is located at 3040 meters above sea level and offers one of the longest ski runs within the entire area. Up here are two real architectural eye-catchers: the ice Q gourmet restaurant, which served as a filming location for the James Bond movie "Spectre", and the in-mountain 007 ELEMENTS adventure world, which is dedicated to Great Britain’s most famous secret agent. Two more experiences that shouldn't be missing on your Sölden bucket list.
By the way: the winter ski area is linked to the glacier area by the comfy “Gletscherexpress” gondola lift. You can easily switch between the ski areas without having to take off your ski boots and get into the car.
The most modern lift infrastructure transports you to the snow-sure slopes of Sölden in no time at all. Thanks to the two feeder mountain gondolas of Giggijoch and Gaislachkogl, which are currently among the most powerful of their kind world-wide. So you can spend your holiday time where you should, namely on the slopes. And if Mother Hulda runs out of steam, we are prepared: 77% of the slopes are equipped with snow-making systems.
Sölden is Austria’s one and only ski resort to have three ski mountains higher than 3000 meters accessible by mountain lifts, the so-called BIG3. They not only offer endless fun on the slopes, but also spectacular viewing platforms that offer great vistas of upper Ötztal’s awe-inspiring mountain world. The ultimate "BIG3 Rally" is recommended to ambitious skiers, comprising the true challenge of skiing up and down the three ski mountains beyond three thousand meters in a single day.
